i’m thinking candle might help. just rub it the candle on the surface of your cutting board.

Linseed oil will help swell the wood and fill in the small cracks. It is also non toxic.

Mineral oil. Anything else will soak into the wood and rot and breed bacteria.

Use mineral oil on all unfinished wood surfaces that get wet in the kitchen: butcher blocks, cutting boards,… You can buy it as “Block Oil” or “Butcher Block Oil”. Wipe the surface with a generous amount of oil. Let it sit and soak up the oil, then wipe it down. Add another coat of oil and let it soak in, keep repeating this until the wood doesn’t soak up any more oil. You might have to alternate sides unless you can stand it up while it’s soaking in the oil. Keep it oiled by periodically oiling the surface until it’s saturated. Dry it with paper towels. The oil can transfer to fabric and some surfaces. Be careful where you keep it.

If the cracks are deep, you may have already ruined that board. If you get a new one just keep it oiled and it will last a long long time.

Any kind of edible oil is fine. This includes olive oil, linseed oil (probably the best for wood but after applying it, leave to soak in for 48 hours since it might taste a bit funny). You might need a couple of coats.

Mineral oil is the most common used. Don’t use cooking oils as they will eventually go rancid, and spoil the board. I have heard that coconut oil is O.K. as it has a shelf life of over two years. What does two year old olive oil smell like?
